Wheat Sprouts

There are a lot of different methods you can sprout wheat.

Sprouting is simple process. In order to get sprouts from wheat seeds, you simply need to put seeds in any kind of container, keep it wet/moisture for several days at normal room temperature and you'll get sprouts.

In literature, and a number of Internet sources, more than often the process of sprouting is done in a similar way as described - put seeds in a container, cover it with a cloth, and keep the cloth wet in dark part of room for several days. Since such environment is good enough to sprout the seeds results are there. You got sprouts. But, since such environment is also good for development of mold and various bacteria I do not recommend it.

Method I will show here, minimize the opportunity any fungal or mold to show, or bad bacteria to develop since the frequent rinsing and draining is done.

The process is very simple.

You need one jar and any kind of mesh material to cover the jar.
The common jar size I mostly use is 3-4l,

The process consists of the following steps:
1. Seed preparation and cleaning/washing
2. Soaking
3. Rinsing/Draining cycles

1. Seed preparation and cleaning/washing

No need to say that you need to have clean environment, and clean jar. Please do not use chemical dish washing liquids. If you need to sterilize your jar, do it with potassium permanganate.

You start with pouring 3-4 small cups of seeds in the jar.

Pour the water in, and rinse it, and repeat this several times. Most plant pieces or damaged seeds will float and could be easily thrown away by this method. Do this until the water is clean.

2. Soaking

Seeds are dormant. They sleep, and wait to be waked to begin new life.
By soaking, we do wake the seeds. All the miracle processes inside the seeds start, ensuring that from small little seed we will get grown plant that will produce new seeds and more plants... and more...

By eating sprouts we eat all that potential. Scientist state that sprout is having 1000 times more nutrition value than the seed or grown plant, because plant has already put all it's potential into new seeds... That's why sprouts are so nutritious and considered as miracle/super food.

Let us get back to our story.

Pour the water in the jar, about 2/3 of the volume, and leave it like this for 12-18 hours.

(ensure that you have at least three times more water than seeds in the jar)

After 12 to 18 hours, seeds will wake, and absorb all the water it can.

Pour out the water and clean seed with several cleaning cycles. It is usually enough to pour water in and out several times.

Drain the water and the sprouting is in final phase.

I usually do not remove mesh cover for further cleaning/rinsing/draining, Mesh will keep seeds/sprouts inside jar.

3. Rinsing/Draining cycles

In the following days, you need to spend several minutes daily for rinsing the seeds/sprouts.
Rinsing should be done 2 to 3 times daily, depending of the room temperature. You have to keep the seed moisture/humid, and not to let it dry. So, in hot summer time, do it three times a day.

Do the rinsing with cold water, and do not spare the water. Use plenty of water with high pressure, because you also do add some oxygen in this process too.

The following step is very important. After rinsing, you have to drain all extent water from the jar.
Seeds should stay wet/moisturized but not soaked in water any more.  I usually do this by putting the jar upside down (with mesh attached to stop seeds falling out), or at 45-60 degree angle at the kitchen sink letting all extend water to get out of the jar.

If you let water stay in the jar you are only helping mold to grow, and will spoil seeds/sprouts. Seeds took all needed water in the process of soaking. Now you just have to help it not to dry.

After good rinsing, I put aside the jar in horizontal position, to give seeds more air contact. I see a lot of people claim that sprouting should be done in dark room/container. Light does not affect sprouts until they develop leafs. Our wheat sprouts will not develop leafs in this process. So, keep it anywhere you like, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent premature drying. Do not close the jar in any container, or closed cabinet, since sprouts need air.

Repeat those simple steps 2 - 3 times daily and the following will occur:

Third day, wheat seed will look like this:
you can see small sprouts.. and the day after:

Now you just put it out to convenient container, and you are ready to consume those delicious sprouts, or in our current story to plant them to grow wheatgrass.

Do not forget to clean your jar immediately and to prepare it for the next batch of sprouting.
